Former child star Tina Toon says she will celebrate Chinese New Year’s or Imlek this Jan. 28 with her family in Jakarta.
The 23-year-old singer said her family usually has a festive celebration at home, including cooking various dishes.
“We usually start cooking the day before the New Year’s celebration — all day straight through until the next day. On the first day, we eat misoa [long life noodles], ayam kodok [roasted stuffed chicken] and yu sheng [fish],” she said during an Imlek lunch held at Mal Ciputra shopping center in West Jakarta on Thursday.
Besides the special menu, her family also prepares kue keranjang (basket cake), oranges, apples and red bakpao (steamed buns). All of the dishes, Tina said, have special meaning that expresses their hopes for a prosperous, lucky new year.
“We are also not allowed to sweep the floor during the New Year’s celebration because it is considered sweeping away our good fortune,” she said.
