Guide to the weekend: Tri-State Marine indoor boat show, online art exhibits, yoga for grief and more

PUBLISHED: | UPDATED:

Here’s a look at things to do online and out of the house in Annapolis and Anne Arundel County this weekend.

Tri-State Marine’s indoor boat show

Tri-State Marine is having an annual boat show at 5861 Deale Churchton Road in Deal from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. The free show admits 30 people by appointment per hour, masks are required and only one family is allowed on each boat at a time. The event features fun activities for kids, light refreshments and a prize drawing where participants could win a $500 fishing gear package. Boats on display include Grady-White and Parker Boats, with product experts available for advice, “whether you’re a novice or a Chesapeake bay old salt.” Pre-registration can be made at tristatemarine.com/tri-state-marine-2021-spring-boat-show.

‘Nurturing the Grieving Heart through Yoga’

Hospice of the Chesapeake is hosting a six-week online yoga workshop from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, starting Jan. 21 through Feb. 28. Cathy Rees, a registered nurse and certified yoga instructor with the Yoga Center of Columbia, leads the gentle workshop that can be done standing or sitting in a chair. The six-week, $40 class is “perfect for grievers,” said Susan Coale, director of the Chesapeake Life Center at Hospice of the Chesapeake.

“Grief impacts every realm of our being — physical, emotional, mental, social and spiritual. Because yoga tends to address us on many levels — including physical and spiritual — grief and yoga are a natural fit. Yoga is well documented as helpful for managing anxiety, which is often a part of grief. The combination of physical activity and breathwork is very calming and helps with focus and relaxation,” Coale said in a statement.

Registration is required and can be completed by calling 888-501-7077 or emailing griefinfo@chesapeakelifecenter.org.

2021 Wild and Scenic Film Festival

Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, in partnership with the Wild and Scenic Film Festival, is sponsoring an online film festival from Thursday through Sunday that “brings together selections of films that inform, inspire and ignite solutions and possibilities to restore the Earth and human communities while creating a positive future for the next generation.” This year’s film festival fundraiser also falls on the alliance’s 50th anniversary. Tickets come with on-demand access to films, along with guest speakers and raffle items. The first live film began at 7 p.m. Thursday. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at allianceforthebay.org/event/wild-scenic-film-festival.

Colonial cocktails

Hammond Harwood House is hosting a free online lecture on early spirited drinks made in Maryland with food historian Joyce White at 7 p.m. Thursday on Zoom. White will take attendees back through time from the earliest days of settlement of Maryland in the 17th century through the 19th century in a discussion that covers popular drinks and cocktails enjoyed by Colonial Marylanders, including cider, perry, beer, Sampson, whiskey, brandy, punch, toddy, shrub and bounce, among other “curious historic spirited drinks.” Registration is required and can be made at hammondharwoodhouse.org/event/early-maryland-spirited-drinks.

‘Athletes for the Arts’

Athletes for the Arts is an online, uplifting online event hosted by Maryland Hall showcasing art made by athletes and celebrities, their stories about how they found artistic success, how art contributes to creating a well-rounded person, live performances and an opportunity to bid on silent auction items. The event, hosted by sportscaster Julie Donaldson, the Washington Football Team’s senior vice president of media and content, starts at 7 p.m. Jan. 27. Artists include former Navy, Washington Football Team and New England Patriot fullback Eric Kettani, former Penn State and Bills/Jets linebacker Aaron Maybin and six-time Grammy-nominated jazz vocalist Nnenna Freelon who will perform throughout the evening. Tickets are $40 and can be purchased at marylandhall.org/events/athletes-for-the-arts/2021-01-27.
