Arlene Mae Gossman was born February 1, 1930, to parents Leo and Julia (Kaipust) Gossman on a farm near Platte Center, NE, where she, along with her five siblings, attended country school. Later, the family moved to a farm near Thompson, IA, where Arlene attended high school. She graduated from Thompson High School with the class of 1948. After graduation, Arlene worked as a telephone operator before attending St. Vincent’s School of Nursing in Sioux City, IA, where she earned her Registered Nurse degree.

Arlene worked many years as an RN, beginning in the office of Dr. John Camp in Britt, IA, then the Newell Good Samaritan Society in Newell, IA, Park View Manor in Sac City, IA, and Shady Oaks Nursing Home in Lake City, IA. She had a strong work ethic and was known for her high standards of care. After Arlene retired from nursing, she became a waitress at Van’s Café in Auburn, IA and thoroughly enjoyed her years there as she made many friends among the “regulars.” Arlene also volunteered her time in the elementary school helping Begindergarten children, and at Twilight Acres in Wall Lake, serving their afternoon coffee.
