Ritchie County returns to list of red counties for high COVID spread on Saturday daily map

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Ritchie County joined Mineral County, Wirt County, Mason County and Wyoming County in the red category, signifying “substantial” coronavirus transmission in the daily County Alert System Map from the state Department of Health and Human Resources released on Saturday morning.

Ritchie County was previously at the red, highest level on Tuesday.

The separate Saturday Education Map, setting school operations and extracurricular activities for the coming week, was due out at 5 p.m.

As of Saturday morning, DHHR had confirmed six additional COVID-related deaths: a Cabell County man, 77, a Wood County man, 72, a Harrison County man, 92, a Hampshire County woman, 74, and two Preston County men, ages 79 and 87.

“As a grandfather, I am particularly sensitive to the grief children are suffering from the loss of a grandparent or beloved neighbor,” Bill Crouch, DHHR secretary, said in a statement.

“West Virginians of all ages are affected by these tragic losses of life.”

In all, 799 new confirmed COVID cases were added to state totals for Saturday out of 12,847 test results reported to DHHR.

West Virginia’s daily infection rate was at 4.17 percent.

Hospitalizations were again at a pandemic high with 540 COVID-19 patients being treated.

Of those patients, 151 were in intensive care with 63 on ventilators.
