PA COVID-19 director and experts explain what communities are hardest hit by COVID-19 and why

The coronavirus has had a devastating impact in our region, with more than 180,000 cases in Pennsylvania and more than 8,000 deaths.

These numbers are no longer decreasing. They are rising. And minority communities are among the hardest hit by both infections and deaths.

Dr. Wendy Braund, COVID-19 Response Director for the Pennsylvania Department of Health, will provide an overview of the impact of the coronavirus on communities in Central Pennsylvania and throughout the commonwealth, at the “COVID-19 Community Impact & Response Summit” at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, sponsored by the World Affairs Council of Harrisburg in collaboration with Capital BlueCross, Highmark and Temple University Harrisburg.

Acclaimed health experts will share their insights on how our communities are coping with the coronavirus and the threat of a second wave that they warn could bring even more suffering and death. They will provide specific information related to minority communities and efforts underway to help save lives this winter when communities will face both the flu and COVID-19.

Panelists will include

  • Oralia Garcia-Dominic, expert in health disparities and medical policy research analyst
  • David Saunders, Director of Health Equity for the Pennsylvania Department of Health
  • Laval Miller-Wilson, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Health Law Project
  • Cheri Rinehart, President & CEO, Pennsylvania Association of Community Health Centers

PennLive Outreach & Opinion Editor Joyce M. Davis, also President and CEO of the World Affairs Council of Harrisburg, will moderate the discussion.

A Q & A session will follow opening remarks and local nonprofits will provide information on available services and resources to help communities cope with COVID-19.
