INSIDE SOCIETY: Good works earn recognition

I always enjoy the chance to attend an award dinner when local folks are recognized for good deeds that would otherwise have gone unnoticed, so it was with great pleasure that I spent the evening of Jan. 18 at the Omni Corpus Christi Hotel with the good folks of Goodwill Industries as they honored several employees and supporters.
The 2017 honorees (drumroll please …) were: Thomas Vega, Achiever of the Year; Nora Santellana, Graduate of the Year; Corpus Christi Hooks, Whataburger, and KFTX 97.5, Business Partners of the Year; Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery, Peerless Cleaners, Trevino Funeral Home, Nueces County Veterans Services, Community Partners of the Year; Arterry Cooper, David Cortinas, Paola Flores, Laurie Gil, Steven Guerrero, Jennifer Hand, Patricia Lopez, Andrew McMillan, Laura Perez, Belinda Trevino, Rachel Willard and Stacey Younger, Presidential Citation winners. Outgoing board members Chad Magill and Otis Peaks were also recognized.

Charity League announces style show
Charity League, Inc. President Sherry Rumley has announced that the annual Charity League and Julian Gold Style Show and Luncheon will be Feb. 16 at the American Bank Center.This year’s theme, “Bienvenidos a San Miguel,” will feature the designs of CAMILLA. Proceeds from the event will benefit Youth Odyssey.
The Style Show and Luncheon will begin with a reception at 11 a.m., followed by the Style Show at 11:45 a.m.Lunch will be served following the style show.
A limited number of tables are still available.Tickets are $60 each or $600 for a table of 10. All tickets may be purchased by mailing checks payable to “Charity League,” P.O. Box 6757, Corpus Christi, Texas 78466-6757. A pre-addressed return envelope should be included with the reservation request. Charity League is a nonprofit group of 40 women who have been raising funds annually for local charitable projects for over 80 years.Last year, Charity League raised $282,000 for CASA of the Coastal Bend.
YWCA announces Y Women in Careers honorees
YWCA Corpus Christi’s 37th Y Women in Careers Awards Banquet is at 6 p.m. March 1 at the Congressman Solomon P. Ortiz International Center.
Since its inception, YWCA has honored 268 women in the Coastal Bend who stand out in their career fields through the Y Women in Careers Award. This professional award highlights accomplishments made by the honorees.
This year's honorees are: Maria Rodriguez Casas, PhD, superintendent of schools, Brooks County Independent School District; Rosie Gonzalez Collin, director of community relations, Port of Corpus Christi Authority; Lori Dellinger, market president, Frost Bank; Vienna J Flores, president/CEO, Tukasa Creations; Dolores Guerrero, PhD, dean, College of Arts & Sciences, Texas A&M University‐Kingsville; Kelly Isaacks, commander, Corpus Christi Police Department; Amy Aldridge Sanford, PhD, associate vice president, academic affairs, Texas A&M University‐Corpus Christi; and Darcy Schroeder, public affairs manager, Valero Bill Greehey Refineries.

MASH Bash returns for Mission of Mercy
Mission of Mercy's annual signature fundraising event, "MASH BASH 2017," is at 6 p.m. March 3 aboard the USS Lexington.
This casual, themed medical military event will include dinner, dancing, silent auction, bid board, photo opportunities, raffle, table decoration contest, two costume contests, special games, awards, a cash bar, and themed decorations.Entertainment to be provided by Cruise Control and The Sweet Adelines. Event masters of ceremony are Mike Gillaspia, Rachel Cole and Maclovio Perez from KRIS. The Chow Line will include steaks from Texas Roadhouse Catering.
The casual uniform dress code will include medical scrubs, military fatigues, nurse uniforms, camo, feather boas or guests can dress like a favorite character from the MASH show such as Hot Lips, Hawkeye or Klinger.
The 201 honorees are Vicki Maixner, RN, Margot Nier, RN, and Nancy Smith, RN.
