'I was horrified': Woman finds live maggots inside Aldi chocolate cake

A NSW woman has been left shocked after discovering live maggots wriggling inside her luxury Aldi chocolate cake.

A woman from regional NSW who did not wish to be identified said she received the cake as a gift from a friend who purchased the dessert from Aldi's Port Macquarie store before Christmas.

But her sweet indulgence quickly turned sour on Saturday when she found two maggots on the surface of the cake.

"I was horrified - it was my son who found it and he said ‘oh my god mum, I think that's a maggot'," the woman told Yahoo7 News.

"I said 'no it can’t be' but it then it moved... you can see the maggot is very alive, I don't understand how it got in there as we had to cut the plastic seal off,"

She claims the maggots were sealed inside the cake's wrapping, which wouldn't peel off when she tried opening the dessert.

Despite the dessert's best before date being February 9, the woman said she didn't expect to find something alive inside.

"It's only a best before date not a use by date. I expected maybe to find mould but certainly not maggots," she said.

One of the maggots was still moving on the surface of the cake.

"I won’t be buying anything from there again."

The woman filmed her discovery and in the footage one of the maggots can be seen moving around on the surface of the chocolate cake.

An Aldi spokesperson told Yahoo7 that they take any instance of food contamination very seriously and hadn't experienced any complaints regarding the product before.

"ALDI thoroughly investigates all claims relating to substandard food quality or the alleged presence of larvae in our product.

"We will do so with this matter and report back to the customer. From the thousands of Luxury Christmas Chocolate Sponge Pudding sold, we have no other recorded concerns.

"If the allegations are found to be true, this obviously does not meet the high standards of quality we hold ourselves to. We welcome direct contact from this customer so that the matter can be investigated."
