The Galaxy S21 trio is here and we all know that the S21 Ultra is the most powerful model of the three. It features a bigger display, supports a 120Hz display refresh rate at maximum resolution, packs a bigger battery, superior cameras, more RAM and internal storage, and supports S Pen. Now, Samsung has revealed yet another secret power of the Galaxy S21 Ultra.

The latest top-of-the-line Samsung flagship also gets the company’s new low-power OLED display. Samsung Display, the Korean behemoth’s display manufacturing arm, claims that the new display technology delivers improved luminosity (brightness) and power efficiency as compared to the previous OLED smartphone panels. The new OLED panel reduces power consumption by up to 16 percent.

OLED displays don’t require a separate light source. They produce their own light when an electric current passes through their self-luminous organic materials. It is essentially the efficiency of organic materials that determine an OLED display’s performance including its color gamut, brightness, high-dynamic-range (HDR), and power consumption.

Samsung Display says its new low-power OLED display uses a “just-developed” organic material that has higher luminous efficiency. The company achieved that by having “electrons flow faster and more easily across the display’s organic layers”. It doesn’t go into much detail explaining this process though. However, as a result, the new OLED panels can achieve higher brightness levels while consuming less power.

The display is one of the most power-consuming components of a smartphone. Samsung says the arrival of 5G networks has further increased the overall battery usage by the display as people now spend more time watching videos on their mobile devices. The company is looking to improve the battery lifetime of 5G smartphones with its new low-power OLED panel.

The Galaxy S21 Ultra is the only smartphone to feature this new display technology as of now. However, since Samsung also supplies its OLED panels to other OEMs, we expect more phones to use the new OLED panels in the future.

The Galaxy S21 Ultra did impress us with its excellent battery life during our review. The device was offering nearly 7.5 hours of screen on time at the highest display resolution. So this new display technology certainly seems to be paying off in real-life usage scenarios as well.

Samsung Display is the largest OLED producer in the world. The company holds nearly 5,000 patents that involve the use of organic materials for displays. It has applied for more than 370 patents related to this technology in each of the past three years. Samsung Display has also been closely collaborating with several global material companies to create more efficient organic display materials. It has seven production facilities and five branch sales offices worldwide.
