ABS Publishes Guide for Offshore Spaceports

Classification society ABS announced it has launched a new set of requirements to guide the burgeoning maritime aspects of the space flight industry in the safe design and construction of offshore assets.The new requirements, launched this week at the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) in Houston amid growing global demand for offshore spacecraft launch and recovery, are said to be the first of their kind internationally.Spaceports are marine or offshore assets that conduct spacecraft launch or recovery.

Nippon Foundation, DeepStar Launch Joint Decarbonization R&D Program

The Nippon Foundation signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the offshore technology development consortium DeepStar to establish a joint research and development program focused on decarbonization in offshore oil and gas, with a focus on renewable energy and the environment.The initial program budget is up to $10 million through 2026, and the overall plan is to develop technologies for commercialization.“I am very pleased that we have been able to conclude this new memorandum of understanding,” said Mr. Sasakawa.

Equinor, BP JV Picks Vestas' Giant 15MW Turbines for New York Offshore Wind Projects

Offshore wind turbine maker will deliver its giant 15MW wind turbines for Equinor and BP joint venture's offshore wind farms in New York.Vestas said Monday that, Empire Offshore Wind, a joint venture between Equinor and BP,  had named it as the preferred turbine supplier for the 2.1 GW Empire Wind 1 and Empire Wind 2 offshore wind projects in New York, USA. "This is one of the largest preferred supplier agreements to be announced in the USA," Vestas said.Vestas will provide 138 V236-15.0 MW turbines for Empire Wind 1 and 2, located 15-30 miles off the coast of Long Island.

Norway's New Offshore Vessel Firm Orders Offshore Wind Vessel Trio from Vard

Norway's Farstad, Volstad, and Kleven have teamed up and formed a new ship-owning company in Norway, called Norwind Offshore, focused purely on offshore wind.For this, Norwind Offshore has already entered into a contract with Vard for the delivery of three vessels by 2024.As part of the order, Vard will design and build two Commissioning Service Operations Vessels (CSOVs) with options for two additional vessels. Also, an order has been placed with Vard for the sales and conversion of one Platform Supply Vessel to be converted to a Service Operation Vessel (SOV).

DecarbonICE Project for Green Shipping

A group of world leading shipping companies including NYK, Sovcomflot, Knutsen OAS and Ardmore, ship builders, including DSME and the mining company Vale, have therefore teamed up with Denmark based Maritime Development Center to develop such an on-board carbon capture and storage solution in a project named decarbonICE.DecarbonICE is based on two new main ideas for the capture and storage part, respectively. The CO2 and other GHG's in the ship exhaust are captured on board in a cryogenic process and turned into dry ice.Proven offshore technology is then applied during normal ship operations to transport the dry ice into the seafloor sediments.

Jon Holvik was named Thrustmaster's Executive Vice President for Business Development of Dynamic Positioning Systems.

Thrustmaster of Texas acquired the ICON Dynamic Positioning business from Rolls Royce earlier this year, a DP product addition to the Thrustmaster product portfolio. In addition to the rights to produce and sell future units of the DP products, Thrustmaster also has responsibility for the maintenance, service and upgrades of existing DP systems presently in operation.
