Jail death of Cerro Gordo inmate being investigated

Authorities are investigating the death of a man incarcerated in a solitary jail cell in northern Iowa.

Cerro Gordo County Jail correctional officers observed the inmate having a "medical issue" in his cell at 8:45 a.m. Wednesday, according to a news release from the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation. Correctional officers entered the cell and began life-saving measures. Mason City Fire and Ambulance transported the inmate to MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center, where he later died. 

The inmate’s name is not being released, pending full notification of his family.  An autopsy will be completed by the state medical examiner in Ankeny.
