Teenager shot by Corpus Christi police officer, two other carjacking suspects identified

The three teenagers arrested after a shooting involving a Corpus Christi police officer on July 4 have been identified.

Corpus Christi police said Jesus Ramos, Nathaniel Martinez and Dominic Favela, all 17, were booked into the Nueces County Jail on charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, unlawful possession of a firearm, evading arrest with a vehicle and evading arrest. All three could face additional charges of aggravated robbery, a news release stated.

Around 12:16 a.m. on July 4, an officer was responding to a call when she recognized a vehicle stolen in an aggravated carjacking that occurred several hours earlier. The officer initiated a traffic stop, and the driver attempted to flee with the vehicle. The driver lost control and wrecked in the area of Interstate Highway 37 southbound at Corn Products Road, according to police.

All three occupants of the vehicle then attempted to flee on foot. The driver allegedly produced what the officer believed to be a weapon, and the officer shot the suspect.

It's still unclear if the suspect produced a weapon at the time of the incident. A spokesperson for the department told the Caller-Times that the incident is still under investigation. Police said in an initial release that they recovered two handguns from the scene.

The Caller-Times has requested unedited copies of the body camera footage from the incident.

Ramos was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He was booked into the Nueces County Jail two days later. Martinez and Favela were taken into custody without incident. All three remained at the jail Wednesday afternoon.

The police department has not yet identified the officer who fired her weapon. It's department policy to identify officers who discharge their weapons. A spokesperson for the department said the officer will be identified after she completes an internal interview process.

The case will be turned over to the Nueces County District Attorney's Office to be presented to a grand jury.
