Cycling her way into Sun Bingo’s TV ad, actor Rosalind Philp is our Exercise Bike Woman.

She sat down with Sun Bingo to talk about what her life is like away from the peddles.

That includes her own cycling habits, what she would do if she won the lottery and an unusual good luck ritual involving a statue of a famous writer/poet.

Meet Rosalind Philp!

Rosalind Philp – Exercise Bike Woman

Are you a keen cyclist?

I am actually! I was one of the first people, before they got popular, to have a Brompton Bike.

I used to commute via bike when I worked in town. It used to take me about an hour and a quarter to cycle in.

I didn’t go very fast. It was my favourite part of the working day, in a way. You feel great. You feel like the city is yours, cycling through it…

I haven’t done it since I’ve had children. I think it’s all very different now with the cycle lanes, it’s better for cyclists now.

It was fine then, it’s just one of those things you get really scared about doing before you do it, but then once you do it, it’s fine.

As long as you don’t take stupid risks on the bike, and don’t undertake anything.

I used to love cycling to work. I could fold the bike up; I got good arm muscles.

I’d put the bike under my desk. It was a bit of a novelty when I did it…

I was keen that my children learn to cycle quite early on. My son cycles to school, but he’s decided that he doesn’t like this one hill, he calls it a mountain…

It’s quite a steep hill; I think it’s really good exercise. However, it’s not very sociable.

So, he’s decided he’d rather it took longer to get to school so that he can chat more with his mates.

It’s a joyful thing, cycling. You get to avoid having to go under ground like with the tube.

I think it’s also a good introduction to road awareness and safety. It’s a useful skill.

Would you and Exercise Bike Woman be friends in real life?

I think I would be because I think she is basically me when I’m on an exercise bike.

I didn’t have to go into another character. It is just like me on an exercise bike.

I’d like to think that as annoying as I know I am, I mean well.

So, I think I’m a good friend. I think we’d be friends.

Which bingo room on Sun Bingo would you like to play in?

Maybe the Cabaret Room?

I’ve been in a few productions: The Martini Encounter, I’m in an ABBA tribute act.

So, Cabaret! I like a bit of escapism and glamour.

Do you enjoy bingo and slot games? Do you have experience playing them?

I’m from Hastings, on the seafront, so I’d play the slot games down the De Luxe.

I used to go by myself and play the Hi-Lo machine, Pontoon, those were my favourites.

You could do the penny slots. My brother was a bingo caller on Hastings Pier…

He’s the most un-bingo-caller person you’d have thought, but I think he quite enjoyed it, flirting with the customers!

I have played bingo myself. I’ve been to bingo halls with some friends.

It was quite surprising how fast paced it was! You really need to be on the top of your game.

There’s no delaying! Once you figure out how it works, you can do it quickly, but it does take you a while to get to grips with it.

If you won the lottery, what’s the first thing you’d buy?

Maybe a convertible British car? Then, a house in the winter sun, with a view over the sea.

Maybe with my own little vineyard. Please and thank you! I might try to manifest that for myself.

I’d feel happy, I’d write… well, in theory I’d write… in practice, I’d just sit in the sun and look at the view.

I’ve been working on a novel for 6/7 years. I’m hoping that at some point, it will be in good enough shape to publish.

What brings you luck in life?

I don’t have a lucky charm, but I am a little bit superstitious.

There’s a statue of Oscar Wilde outside Charing Cross on the way towards Leicester Square.

If I go for an audition or anything, I will grab his finger and get a bit of luck!

My friend, who’s an actor, introduced me to the tradition. I think it might be known because his finger is super shiny.

So, take a bit of hand sanitiser with you and have a go.
