'Sonic The Hedgehog 2' Interviews | Jim Carrey, Ben Schwartz
It is bigger and better in every way. And I'm in it. Well, I think it's a lovely kind of reminder of innocence. And, you know, there was something sweet about this movie The first time around. You know, there were people that looked at it and went like, I don't know, it's a kids movie. Do you really want to do a kids movie? And I went, well, yeah. And, you know, because kids appreciate movies like nobody else. But but first of all, there was something sweet about it. At the heart of it, you know, I play the contrast to this incredible innocence. You know, I play the, you know, evil, 3 point O quantum version of Robotnik in this, and there's no limits to my powers. I'm a demigod of evil and it's all in service of showing you again what matters, which is that, you know at some point of our lives we were these innocent non skeptical beings that enjoyed everything that popped up in the zeitgeist, you know, and and and it was innocent and beautiful and you didn't care you know what the bubble gum was going to do to you. You just chewed it up and blew a bubble man. You know, you didn't look at the ingredients. Yeah, it's like, it's, I hope it's fun for the audience to see this sort of transition that's going on from the first movie, the second film, and the first movie was like Tom and Sonic were buddies and and you know, they kind of, you know, ate chili dogs together and hung out. And now it's like, I think they're both feeling the word responsibility, right? Like Tom's feeling a certain responsibility and Maddie feeling for sort of guiding him through his life and raising a kid. And they weren't ready for this, really. And he's he's having to learn about responsibility and and with his great powers come that responsibility so but but yeah I mean you know it's like that that parental thing of like you can't be their best friend but you got to be you know you got to teach them and guide them but but but you can still you know you can still have a good relationship I guess is what I'm trying great point terrible way to end I I didn't go to a screening of that of that film but the people that sent me videos of their theaters exploding was just overwhelming. Who knew that that I had no idea that that would happen. I knew people like Tails I knew people loved Sonic but that universally people were screaming in the theaters. I it was amazing. It was so freaking fun. I don't know if you could say freaking, but yeah, I said it twice, but it was that much fun, you know, like Natalia working with Natasha, who's the an incredible artist in general, all around, and to collaborate with her and to just have fun, like, that's the juicy part, right? Like to leave it all on the table and do all the things that weren't in the script and it made it and you're like, oh, that's cool. That's the stuff we live for. So for me, that was one of the most exciting parts. When I do comedy scenes, I always like liking it to tennis. And sometimes it's playing tennis with drapes and you hit the ball and hits the drape and it's the floor and you got to chase it. And that's a hard joke to make fly. But then sometimes you're across from Venus, you get to play and it's just so much fun. Character is so important and that's just, that's specific to all movies. It's not something that's just a video game. Adaptations, whether it's a comic book, a video game, you know, a short story. No matter what the source material is, it's always going to come down to character. It's always going to come down to the audience falling in love with those characters, rooting for them, whatever the whatever journey they're going on. So it's so important and we work so hard, especially bringing in new characters like Knuckles and Tails in this film that that you really sort of are are are rooting for them and you're invested in them. The family too, just to speak to that. Like it got bigger. You know we have Knuckles, we have a Tails joining. I mean, it's the the family is getting more interesting and more fun and dynamic, and I think audiences are really going to enjoy it. And Shamar as well. Yeah, I think the job was more trying not to be too conscious of fabricating anything to try and one up what we had in the first movie. And I think what worked so well in the first movie that ends up working out even better in this one is just keeping it authentic between Stone and Robotnik. How do they engage with each other? How does Stone engage with other people in this day and age, Whatever reason we can have? Because everybody's in their own little rooms and their own little spaces, and they got their video chairs and they got their whatever, and they're they're kind of lost in their own little, you know, cliques that they create online or whatever. And this is an actual thing that physically pulls families together and allows them to sit together and enjoy something in common, you know, which? Which makes me hay, you know? And if I can give a little bit of that back to the world, it D be great. Was the John Ralphio line improv or was that in the script? They. OK, So what happened was the reason that happened was we we did this scene And so I'm reacting to what's on television. It's a movie and we're trying to find clearances for different films. And I did, I did a joke line for like 3 or 4 different movies. And then in the end, we couldn't get them. And it was one of the last things we recorded for like, well, what if we didn't make fun of the like the movie itself? And what if you just did? And then Jeff and Toby said, what if you did like John Ralphio's one of his quotes and I did it and I did it in the booth and they filmed me doing it and they animated it like Sonic doing John Ralphio, which means John Ralphio is Cannon in the Sonic universe, which means Sonic three could just be Sonic and John Ralphio saving the world, which I think nobody is asking for. But there was one other John Ralphio reference in it. There's a don't be suspicious reference and we cut it because we decided that more than one John Ralphiel references way too many. John Ralphiel. No. Never. Never can have too many. No. Oh my gosh. Well we got to do so much cool stuff with this film. I mean if you when you watch it, it's not going to look like the studio said no to anything. Which is why it's so great and such a a big fun movie that I'm so excited for people to see in in a in a theatre on a big screen. No, we really got to go big on this one. And of course there's there's stuff that that we saved not for because it was too big, but just for, you know, for the story. Everything had to fit. It had to be right for the story we're telling. But there's 30 years of of this character, of Sonic and and there's so much great material. So yeah, it it's exciting that that that there's so many characters, so many storylines to kind of pull from as we continue to kind of craft our movie storyline. There's more action, more adventure. And since I have an agent now, there are perks. I have 4 words for you. Contractual chili dog breaks. I put a little tremola on there, but I'm. I'm definitely in the wrong key. Go unskilled, untrained, unworthy. You forgot one. Unstoppable.
