A revolution in how Florida handles its homeless starts Tuesday. A new state law will ban people from sleeping on public property, and could force massive changes in how cities and counties respond to the growing unhoused population.

A law banning public camping and sleeping takes effect on Oct. 1, affecting homeless populations across the state.

The new Florida law bars local governments from allowing people to sleep in places such as public buildings and in public rights of way. Local governments would be allowed to designate areas for homeless people to sleep.
