And if we think of that peak as a kind of Mount Olympus, the park far below seems aptly named. Red, pink, and grey rock formations are the highlight of the Garden of the Gods, and they come in myriad shapes and sizes: Spindly spires, hulking monoliths, and surreal boulders perched precariously on slanted ledges. This gargantuan geology lies beneath Colorado's wide skies and we can just about imagine mythical gods roaming the place. Or dinosaurs. In fact, the skull of a unique species of dinosaur, Theiophytalia , was found here in 1878, and is still the only known specimen in the world... See more See less
