In 1951 it became the first such park established in the country, containing both the largest natural lake in Wales (Llyn Tegid ) and the tallest mountains in the United Kingdom found outside of Scotland. In fact, the region was named after the highest peak in Wales: Mount Snowdon . Snowdonia's ecosystem is varied and rare enough to earn it significant protected status.
