At an average elevation of about 8,000 feet versus the South Rim's 7,000, the North Rim towers over the south and features a colder climate. It's also much emptier of tourists here on the North Rim: Since the canyon has no road crossings, the north side of the canyon is an imposingly long drive from Arizona cities like Phoenix and Flagstaff.
