At an average elevation of about 8,000 feet versus the South Rim's 7,000, the North Rim towers over the south and features a colder climate. It's also much emptier of tourists here on the North Rim: Since the canyon has no road crossings, the north side of the canyon is an imposingly long drive from Arizona cities like Phoenix and Flagstaff. Only about 10 percent of Grand Canyon National Park's visitors venture to the North Rim, and because it gets chillier here in the winter, it's usually open only between May and October...
