As the Renaissance was flowering throughout Italy , Torrechiara Castle was being redesigned as a fortress of massive stone towers and parapets bound by a triple wall. The imposing structure with its fierce façade was certainly meant to evoke fear in any potential enemy. But Torrechiara was also built as a home for Bianca Pellegrini, the beloved mistress of the castle's owner, Pier Maria Rossi.
