Cologne is rich in museums and galleries. These include the Wallraf-Richartz and Ludwig museum complex, with an exceptionally comprehensive collection ranging from paintings of the medieval Cologne school to contemporary art; the Schnütgen Museum of medieval ecclesiastical art; the Museum of Oriental Art, with artworks from China and Japan; and the Rautenstrauch-Joest Museum, with ethnological collections. The annual Rhenish pre-Lenten carnival is celebrated with great ceremony, culminating in the Rose Monday festival before Ash Wednesday.
