Black Hills National Forest borders Hot Springs on the west and south. The Buffalo Gap National Grassland, of which Hot Springs is a district headquarters, is to the south and east. Badlands National Park and Jewel Cave National Monument are also nearby. It is located along the Fall River and is enclosed by red rocks which seemingly serves as its walls. The area's warm mineral springs, which were said to have therapeutic qualities, were previously frequented by Sioux and Cheyenne Indians. The Evans Plunge, a huge natural-warm-water indoor pool erected in 1890, is still a popular tourist destination.
