5 Norwalk, Conn., Schools to Get Free Chromebooks from Verizon Program

A handful of schools in the Norwalk area will join three other regional schools currently enrolled in the Verizon Innovative Learning program, which will provide free Chromebooks and data plans to students and staff.

(TNS) — Students and teachers at Brien McMahon and Norwalk high schools, the Center for Global Studies, P-Tech Norwalk and Roton Middle School will get free Chromebooks and Verizon data plans starting in fall 2024.

"The Verizon Innovative Learning initiative allows us to put the future in the hands of our scholars and our educators, to prepare them for an ever-changing world," Norwalk Public Schools' Superintendent Alexandra Estrella said. "We understand how important digital technology is in today's and tomorrow's workforce, and our scholars will have a leg up thanks to this partnership with Verizon."

The five schools will join Ponus Ridge STEAM Academy as well as Nathan Hale and West Rocks middle schools in the Verizon program.

"At Verizon, we all know how critical access to technology and skills development is in today's digital world," said Mario Acosta-Velez, region director for Verizon local engagement and corporate social responsibility. "That's why we are proud to bring Verizon Innovative Learning Schools to Norwalk Public Schools and enable students to develop the skills, knowledge, and capabilities to be successful and become the next generation of STEM leaders."

The eight participating Norwalk schools are among 626 high and middle schools in the Verizon program across the country, an NPS statement said.

"Being part of the program will keep students connected, helping to facilitate learning wherever it's taking place," the statement said.

Beyond the data plans and laptops, the schools "will be assigned a full-time coach to train teachers in effectively integrating technology into their lessons."

The initiative is "part of the Citizen Verizon initiative, whereby Verizon strives to move the world forward for all people," its website said.
