JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - Good times and good vibes took over part of the capital city in this year’s edition of the South Jackson Parade and Festival.

Many South Jackson residents kicked off their weekend by enjoying the 5th Annual South Jackson Parade and Festival.

The parade started along McDowell Road and ended at Cardozo Middle School, where several food vendors and play areas for kids were set up.

The festival also included a competition between all the bands that took part in the parade.

“I’m just loving it. We hear so many things negative about South Jackson,” South Jackson resident Maxine Smith said. “I’m so glad I ran across this over the news. I’m here today with my grandkids, and my granddaughters, and to see so many people out here, so many bands, so much positive energy... I’m loving it.”

“Just for all of us, as a generation to just come together... you have the older people, in between and the next one’s up. It’s just beautiful,” South Jackson resident and Community Strong member Joshua Sanders said.

The event also offered health services, business opportunities, and even a DUI crash site to teach drivers about the dangers of driving under the influence.

Reset Jackson Founder James Hopkins says more events like this are needed in the capital city to help Jackson live up to its nickname.

“The ‘City of Soul,’ that’s what they call us, we’re the ‘City of Soul.’ Today, we’re showing that soul that we have, you know, it’s a great thing. It’s a great thing and I’m excited to be here. I’m excited to be a part of it. One city, one community!”

The plan is to bring the parade and festival back next year, which is always the second Saturday in April.
