Containment increases for wildfire in Calaveras County near New Melones Lake
Crews have managed to contain part of a wildfire that sparked in Calaveras County near New Melones Lake on Wednesday and prompted evacuations, fire officials said. Called the Airola Fire, it had burned at least 700 acres near Parrotts Ferry Road, north of the Parrotts Ferry Bridge in Vallecito, Cal Fire said. It is 50% contained as of Friday night.Evacuation orders were issued for all of Parrotts Ferry Road from the Tuolumne/Calaveras county line at Parrotts Ferry Bridge to Highway 4, including Moaning Cavern and Camp Nine Road areas, the Calaveras County Sheriff's Office said. East of Red Hill Road to Parrotts Ferry Road was also evacuated. The sheriff's office additionally issued evacuation warnings for the towns of Douglas Flat and Murphys. While residents are not required to evacuate under evacuation warnings, it is still encouraged to do so as fire behavior can change erratically.The Calaveras County Office of Emergency Services announced road closures at Parrotts Ferry Road at State Route 4. Animal shelters are located at both the Calaveras County Animal Services on 901 Jeff Tuttle Drive in San Andreas and the Calaveras County Fairgrounds on 2465 Gun Club Road in Angels Camp. You can take small livestock to the San Andreas location but large animals are only accepted at the fairgrounds.Albert Michelson Elementary School and the Transitional Adult Education Program was closed Thursday due to the wildfire, the office of emergency services said. Hazel Fischer Elementary and Avery Middle School will remain open.
