All American Pet Photo Day is July 11 th. Sharing photos of our pets isn’t a new concept, books like “Awkward Family Pet Photos,” by Mike Bender are part of the library’s collection. The staff at the DL Public Library decided to have some fun with this. Go to our Facebook page to see our pet photos, and post your own.

We all love our pets, and the books highlighted below are the type that helps pet owners provide good care and training for them.

Many youngsters wish for a canine companion — but many instructional books are geared toward adults or more advanced readers! Providing an insightful and accessible look at several aspects of dog ownership, "A Dog's Life" highlights how to train, care for, and understand our loyal four-legged companions. In National Geographic's comprehensive and easy-to-use illustrated pet reference, a renowned veterinarian offers expert advice on common health, behavior, and training for cats, dogs, and other domestic pets.

Combining first aid, medical reference, and tips and tricks of the trade, here is your go-to-guide for at-home animal care, focusing on dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, and more! Building on more than two decades of veterinary experience, Dr. Gary Weitzman covers topics including upset stomachs, house training, physical ailments and behavior tips. The president and CEO of the San Diego Humane Society and former co-host of the weekly NPR show The Animal House, “Dr. Gary” brings a wealth of experience to essential veterinary questions, revealing basic first-aid techniques, when a trip to the vet is necessary, dietary recommendations, simple training techniques, necessary supplies, essential behavior cues, and much more.

Library Happenings

As of Wednesday, July 1, the Detroit Lakes Public Library is OPEN. The library will be offering services while maintaining social distance, sanitation procedures and more based on the following schedule:

  • Mondays and Wednesdays, 9 a.m.-7 p.m.
  • Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Saturdays, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

The library is closed on Sundays.

While the library building was closed to the public, a number of new services were introduced, including the addition of wireless hotspots to its collection.

Wireless hotspots are portable internet access devices that allow you to connect to a WiFi network using your computer, smartphone or another device at home or while on-the-go. It supports up to 15 device connections through a built-in wi-fii app. It is compatible with most Wi-Fi-enabled devices including: laptops, digital cameras, game consoles and more.

Customers can check out wireless hotspots the same way they would check out a book or DVD, with a 14-day loan period and two possible auto-renewals if no one else has requested it. To request a device, place a hold on a wireless hotspot in the library’s catalog, or call the library for assistance.

Another addition to the library's services is access to the Hoopla streaming service, allowing cardholders to stream popular movies and TV shows and download eBooks and eAudiobooks. Get started at larl.org/ebooks .
