Saint John Center is hosting its Raisin' the Rent event on March 5. The agency's goal is to raise at least $325,000 as it works to help solve the city’s issue of homelessness.
"The need is definitely prevalent and it's definitely increasing each day," said Ra'Shann Martin, executive director of Saint John Center.
The nonprofit attacks homelessness from three angles: through its street outreach team, permanent supportive housing and day shelter with social services.
"Right now, we have 55 guests that we allow in the shelter, but what that means is unfortunately there's always somebody left in the cold," Martin said.
In an effort to get more people out of the cold, the non-profit just launched the first part of their 16th annual Raisin' the Rent fundraiser. It's a raffle with limited tickets for each item.
"The raffle went live on Jan. 15th and there are a ton of exciting prizes that you can win including a finish line suite at Churchill Downs for you and 39 of your friends and that's the week of Derby that you can use that," Martin said.
There will also be an online silent auction that launches next month.
"All of it ultimately helps us get individuals home," Martin said. "Last year, we moved 320 people home and this year we hope to exceed even that."
St. John Center will choose the winners of the raffles and silent auction during a live-stream event on March 5.
