Hello all! I'll be traveling to San Antonio next week for work and I've done my homework (and searched the forums) to find some good places to stop for a drink, but what I didn't quite see was anything on the best burgers or pizza in town.

I've googled this a bit, so I'm beginning a list, but is there any sort of consensus here on the best place to get a burger or pizza?

I'm staying on the Lackland side of town, which I understand is a barren wasteland of beer, so I'm already going to be driving out to Freetail and Busted Sandal, with possible stops at Stella's Public House (pizza) and Big Hops (unless everyone says the Flying Saucer is the place to be).

As a side question, how is the beer at the San Antonio Missions ballpark? I'm considering taking in a game on the 25th (my last night in town).

    Thanks all!

Pizza at Freetail. I also like Dough, but they really just carry wine.

For burgers, I like either Big'z, The Cove, or Chris Madrid's. Believe Big'z and The Cove carries craft beers (I usually don't want that sorta thing with my greasy ass burger) Chris Madrid's doesn't. Or if you haven't had it, SA has an In N Out now.

I am sure people may have better suggestions though.

For pizza, go with Trilogy or Little Italy. Luciano's is awesome too, but more of a chain

Burgers... Nothing is better than Chris Madrids IMO. I also like Sam's Burger Joint. Chunkeys is supposed to be good, never been there though

You can hit Big Hops and Flying Saucer at the same time. They are right across the street from each other... huebner BH location

Mission's games pretty much just have Freetail Bat Outta Helles on draft and cans and FT Soul Doubt in cans. The rest is typical crap. Last year they also had some Karbach, but haven't seen it this year.

Pizza- you must to go to Stella Public House. The taps there are pretty solid too!

Pizza - Freetail, Stella, 46th Street and Florio's are my favorites. The latter two don't have craft beer though.

Burgers - I'm probably one of the few people who doesn't like Chris Madrids. It's not that it doesn't taste good, I just don't like having to eat my burger with a fork. My favorites are Bigz, Chester's, and Fatboys. The first two should have decent beer options. Fatboys has a location right next to Big Hops Huebner, which allows outside food.

Stella hands down for Pizza. Kill two birds with one stone and drink at Big Hops Huebner while eating Fatboy Burger.

Sounds like Stella's is going to the place to hit for pizza, and as a second option Freetail if I do the brewpub over the more centrally located taproom. I'm leaning towards making the drive up to the brewpub since that also gets me close to two liquor stores I've seen recommended - though google maps tells me there is a Gabriel's nearish Lackland area.

Jury is still out on the burgers, though I appreciate the suggestions. Chris Madrid's is sounding good, and I'm curious about the Cove. I'll have to look up some of those other suggestions.

I have hit and In-N-Out burger out in San Diego, so I've got that covered. I think I saw Whataburger is in the airport, so I can hit that when I'm heading out since we don't have one of those in Minnesota.

Gabriel's has stores all over the city, but the Superstore at 1604/Blanco is the only one worth shopping at. The others won't have much of a craft selection.

The Cove is a really neat spot. It's definitely worth checking out if you find yourself in that area.

Stella Public House for Pizza and The Cove for Burgers are my favorites. Stella has a good tap and bottle list. The last few times I have gone they had a Bishop's Barrel that I had missed out on when it was originally released. The Cove always has a good Texas tap list selection to go with organic burgers and veggies.

Big Hops usually has a good tap selection which I like to look at on there website so I can daydream about what I will be drinking when I eventually leave work. There is a Freebirds World Burrito next to the Big Hops on Huebner, I've taken a long lunch on a Friday before and gotten that and taken to to BH to eat while I drink.

    That Bishop's Barrel sounds excellent.

I'm definitely on the lookout for some good Texas beer that I don't get up in Minnesota. I'm hoping to run across Live Oak Hefeweizen while there. It could determine which Big Hops I go to, if it ends up on tap at one of them. I've been drooling at their tap lists on the website. I just wish the Gastropub's taplist was also updated on the Big Hops website. It seems to be otherwise ignored.

Chris Madrids has been voted best burger in the city since like forever. It's a must hit SA dive. Bigz is where you take the kids to play. Mediocre burgers IMO

Gastropub closed down. Can't go wrong at Freetail.

I'm there for five nights, so here's a tentative plan

    Freetail Brewpub (Pizza + Beer)
    Stella's Public House (Pizza)
    Chris Madrid's (Burger)
    The Cove (Burger)
San Antonio Missions Game - ballpark food, weather permitting.

Some of this will depend on how lazy I am feeling on some nights (or if I'm feeling social with work colleagues I'm meeting), but the first three are must hits. The other two would be nice. And somewhere in between, I'll make it to Busted Sandal and probably Big Hops.

    Thanks much, all!

That sounds like a great line-up. When you go to Stella, try the Wild Mushroom Mac n Cheese.

If you want some creative burgers...After pizza at Freetail head to the Roo Pub about 10 minutes from there for dessert....a Krispy Kreme burger (burger on two donuts). Or their Mac n Cheese burger (burger with two deep fried Mac n Cheese as the buns). A decent selection of craft beer too (although not as good as the others people have mentioned above). Medical centers nearby too for angiograms afterwards

You could go full cheddar and do the mac n' cheese pizza at Freetail followed by a mac n' cheese burger at Roo.

Reading this thread, it's no wonder why SA is always near the top of all the fattest city lists. Lol

What about a big plate of enchiladas? You got that place scoped out yet?
