Chicago has been named the No. 2 destination in the country for techies, according to Mintigo, a marketing platform improving marketers’ success.

Chicago ranked No. 2, behind only New York. The rest of the top ten shook out as follows: San Francisco, Houston, Washington D.C., Atlanta, Dallas, Seattle, Boston, and Austin. Chicago scored high across the board, particularly well for C++ developers, according to the article. Additionally, researchers surveyed for signs of Windows, Unix, iOS, and web and mobile application development when comparing cities.

The company monitored the following metrics for each county in the country to come to their conclusion: technology usage patterns, jobs and hiring for technology related positions, news about tech topics, and website mentions on relative topics. According to an article on the Mintigo blog, the indicators it used for this research are “regularly collected by Mintigo to build the best and biggest B2B database in the world.”

Mintigo noted the correlation in its research between a region’s population and its positive environment for techies. The larger the population, the better off techies are. There is a distinction, their research shows, in having a tech-friendly city and having a vibrant startup scene. In fact, the research attests that many of the tech-strong cities lack a bustling startup scene.

Startups, Mintigo noted, are just one factor, especially considering that tech giants, financial firms, biomedical companies, and government entities employ a large amount of tech-skilled workers.
