Steelers broadcaster Tunch Ilkin says he's been diagnosed with ALS
Tunch Ilkin, the Pittsburgh Steelers radio broadcaster and former offensive lineman, says he has been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, known as Lou Gehrig's disease."In the early morning, my arms are tired and my hands are tired. But as the day goes on, I start getting more energetic," Ilkin said in a video posted by his church, The Bible Chapel, where he is the pastor of men's ministry. "It is a challenge to me for the morning. It's a challenge for me because I'm on medication, and one of the medications makes me tired mid-morning. But after lunch, I start picking up steam. There are times I get fatigued, but there's times that I get energetic."There is no known cure for ALS, a progressive disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. It often starts in the hands, feet or limbs, then spreads to other parts of the body, causing loss of muscle control and eventually affecting the muscles needed to move, speak, eat and breathe, according to the Mayo Clinic.Ilkin said he is staying active, working out four days a week, going on a prayer walk for an hour each morning and jumping on his mini-trampoline for a half hour every day."I want to fight this thing, with the help of Jehovah-Rapha, the Lord, my healer, with the help of God. You know, I'm not going to lie down and take this lightly," Ilkin said. The full interview appears in the Facebook video below.
