BIS extends registration for WSA Mobile 2014 [Bahrain News Agency]


(Bahrain News Agency Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Manama, Jul 21 (BNA) -- Bahrain Internet Society (BIS) has announced the extension of the registration period for the World Summit Award (WSA) Mobile 2014 contest for individuals, businesses and government organisations within the Kingdom of Bahrain that are interested in participating in the contest. During this extension, WSA continues to accept mobile applications projects via the WSA designated national expert for each of the 175 countries, members of the United Nations Organisation and UNESCO until July 23.



All those interested in getting nominated should send an immediate e-mail that includes the title and brief about the participating mobile application project to [email protected]. In the case of possible nomination, the chosen nominees will be contacted by Bahrain's designated national expert to complete the registration process. The World Summit Award Mobile (WSA-mobile) is a contest that is organised by WSA every two years as a global initiative to select and promote the world's best in mobile content and innovative applications within the framework of and in cooperation with the United Nations' World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), mandated by the WSIS Plan of Action and executed in collaboration with UNESCO, UNIDO and UN GAID. WSA-mobile emphasizes cultural diversity and identity, the creation of varied information content and the digitalization of educational, scientific and cultural heritage. It aims to make the benefits of the new Information Society accessible and meaningful for all humanity, and in particular, to raise public awareness and give deserved public recognition to the highest quality e-Content, produced all over the world. Furthermore, this initiative supports the development of any participating country's national economy and the utilisation of ICT in its various spheres. In this regard,Nawaf Abdulrahman, President of Bahrain Internet Society (BIS) and the designated WSA Mobile 2014 National Expert in the Kingdom of Bahrain said: "For those wishing to participate in the World Summit Award Mobile 2014, whether individuals, public institutions or companies across the Kingdom of Bahrain, they should submit their mobile applications projects through the WSA designated National Expert, who will do the initial evaluation for these submitted applications and select eight applicants at a rate of one applicant for each of the eight categories or areas identified by the World Summit Award Mobile 2014 Contest and they are: "m-Government & Participation", "m-Environment & Health", "m-Learning & Education", "m-Tourism & Culture", "M-Entertainment & Lifestyle", "m-Media & News", "m-Business & Commerce" and last but not least "m-Inclusion & Empowerment." Abdulrahman also said: "We were very proud when one of the Mobile applications that were presented by one of the local banks participated in the WSA Mobile 2013 Contest for the category of m-Business & Commerce was one of the winners. This nomination allowed Bahrain to achieve through the BIS nominated electronic mobile phone bank service application "Moby Cash" that was created and launched by Bahrain-based Ithmaar Bank, Islamic retail bank and nominated for this award by BIS. WSA President, Prof. Dr. Peter A. Bruck hailed the level and success achieved by Bahrain in the field of mobile applications that made it one of the 40 winners of last year's contest as he said: "in a world of six billion mobile phones, the future will be for the applications of this phone." Abdulrahman added: "Bahrain's successive winnings in its WSA participations in recent years confirm that Bahrain is rich in individuals and institutions that are able to compete and win on an international level by international standards in the field of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), and inevitably we will support the nominees applying with mobile applications that are in line with international standards determined by the award's trustees. We will be proud to see more locally developed mobile application projects, which represent Bahrain, participate in the contest, especially if they win and take part, in the presence of their owners, in the special awards ceremony where they can be honoured amongst international participants with an equal opportunity to showcase their projects on a high-level international stage. The award's closing ceremony will be held in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, between 1st and 3rd February, 2015 where the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) will be hosted. With its continuous initiatives and serious efforts, BIS confirms its support and encouragement of creativity, innovators and developers in the Kingdom of Bahrain in the fields of ICT and the Internet. He pointed out that those individuals, institutions and business companies within Bahrain wishing to be nominated for the WSA Mobile Contest should send the title and a brief about the mobile application project to [email protected] by Wednesday, July 23, as an extended deadline set by WSA. If the mobile application is nominated, the source whether individual, institution or company will be contacted to complete the registration process. Consequently, the projects are evaluated by an international jury and the results will be announced at the WSIS Congress in Abu Dhabi in February 2015.
