Harold Lancer, MD, announced the Lancer Endowed Chair of Dermatology at Massachusetts General Hospital, which will recognize the talent, accomplishments and work of Richard Rox Anderson, MD, FAAD, director of the Massachusetts General Hospital Wellman Center for Photomedicine, as its first recipient.

The newly created endowed chair will allow for further research into diagnostic and therapeutic techniques and procedures, according to a press release.

Lancer is an alumnus of Harvard Medical School and said he looks forward to seeing the contributions Anderson will make in the field as a result of the endowment.

“The Lancer Endowed Chair is a uniquely significant event in many aspects,” Lancer said in his speech at the Paul S. Russell, MD Museum of Medical History and Innovation at Massachusetts General. “Yes, I am a dermatologist first and foremost. Yes, I am a physician and surgeon and yes, I am a clinician who practices medical, surgical and cosmetic dermatology. But I am at the root of it all a Harvard-trained dermatologist and as such, perhaps a renaissance position, not simply a ‘provider’ or ‘injector.’ ... We are specialists of the highest order and need to wake up from our complacency, so payers, poachers and posers don’t undermine our craft. We have to keep our image strong and in the eyes of the consuming public it is important so our training and unique skillset are not diluted.”
