Slagle, Hortense

Hortense Byrd Slagle, prominent local resident whose husband operated Slagle Insurance Agency, died in an automobile accident on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002.

She was a longtime member (47 years) of First Presbyterian Church and the Lee Anderson Sunday School Class. She was a former Sunday School teacher in the Primary Department and was active in Women in the Church.

She attended the Chattanooga Bible Institute and was currently working on a book known as the "Butterfly Lady." She was a member of the Lookout Mountain Beautiful Garden Club and was a recipient of the Anna Law Spirit Award in 1995. She was the former chaplain and was currently serving as the historian for the club.

She was a member of the Lookout Mountain Book Club and the Lookout Mountain Study Club. She was instrumental in making Lookout Mountain a bird sanctuary.

She was part owner of the new StarrStruck Cafe started by her daughter, Starr Slagle Davenport.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Bunn Slagle, and her son, Steven Ray Slagle.

Survivors include her daughter, Starr Davenport of Lookout Mountain, Ga.; three grandchildren, Marchant Davenport, Ray Davenport and Sarah Davenport, all of Lookout Mountain, Ga.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday at First Presbyterian Church with Ben Haden, Joe Novenson and Dr. Mike Milton officiating.

Interment will follow in Forest Hills Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m., both on Friday and Saturday, at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, S. Moore Rd.

Memorial contributions can be made to Changed Lives Ministries, Messianic Ministries to Israel, or to the Chattanooga Bible Institute.

Funeral arrangements are by the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.
