SHELDON? >> TONIGHT, IT'S THE CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER FOR THE CAREY HEIGHTS COMMUNITY CARE REHAB FACILITY THAT'S SAYING THAT IT IS FREE OF THE COVID-19 CORONAVIRUS BUT THAT'S NOT THE PICTURE THE STATE PAINTED WITH NUMBERS RELEASED YESTERDAY. >> CAREY HEIGHTS MAY NOT HAVE ANY COVID-19 CASES TODAY BUT THE PENNSYLVANIA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH SAYS THE VIRUS HAD A STRONGHOLD ON A FACILITY AT THE WORST TIME OF THE PANDEMIC. HERE ARE THE NUMBERS RELEASED YESTERDAY. 65 RESIDENTS WERE INFECTED WITH THE VIRUS. IN ADDITION, 22 EMPLOYEES WERE INFECTED, AND 28 DEATHS ARE REPORTED DUE TO THE VIRUS INSIDE OF CARING HEIGHTS. LISA TELLS US HER FATHER DIED FROM THE VIRUS INSIDE THE FACILITY. HIS NAME IS ROBERT -- >> I HAD TO TELL MY MOTHER OVER THE TELEPHONE THAT MY DAD PASSED AWAY. I COULDN'T GO AND GIVE HER A HUG. I COULDN'T CRY ON HER SHOULDER. SHE COULDN'T CRY ON MINE. WE COULDN'T HAVE ANY TYPE OF A FUNERAL. >> SHE SAYS SHE WAS STUNNED BY THE NUMBER OF COVID-19 DEATHS INSIDE CARING HEIGHTS. >> I WAS AWARE THAT THERE WERE SOME PEOPLE FROM THOSE WHO PASSED AWAY BUT I'M SURPRISED TO HEAR THE NUMBER IS 28. >> IN A STATEMENT, PITTSBURGH'S ACTION NEWS 4 SAYS THE CHIEF MEDICAL EXAMINER DOES NOT ADDRESS THOSE CASES NOR THE DEATHS. SHE SAYS, "AT THIS TIME, WE HAVE NO RESIDENTS POSITIVE FOR COVID-19." Data released on coronavirus cases at long-term care facilities in Pennsylvania
Caring Heights Community Care & Rehab Center is responding to the latest data released by the Pennsylvania Department of Health, showing an alarming number of COVID-19 infections and deaths. Numbers were released Tuesday, showing 28 deaths in the facility, however, Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Nancy Istenes says in a released statement no coronavirus cases exist inside their facility. “At this time, we have no residents positive for COVID-19. The facility acts in the best interest of its residents to promote their health, safety and welfare. We have and continue to work closely with the Department of Health and follow all necessary guidelines and regulations. Due to HIPAA regulations, we cannot comment on any personal health information," says Dr. Istenes.Gov. Click here to see all available data from the Department of Health.“Long-term care facility residents are among the most vulnerable Pennsylvanians, and we want their families to have the latest information on what is going on in the facilities in which their loved ones reside,” Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine said. “COVID-19 is a particularly challenging situation for these settings as they care for residents with serious medical conditions. We will continue to work to ensure the safety and wellbeing of residents through education, resources and testing.”The data provides the number of cases, number of employee cases and number of deaths that have occurred at each facility. NOTE: For facilities with less than five in any of these data points, the information is redacted.
