Sleeping next to a snorer can be quite bothersome. It can be quite irritating especially when it interrupts your sleep or prevents you from falling back asleep. All you could probably do is watch the clock and find out how many more hours of sleep is left and worrying about how you are going to feel tired the next day.

Here is some relief! Science is here to justify that all the above-mentioned complaints. According to the British Snoring & Sleep Apnea Association, about 20 million British individuals are sleep deprived due to passive snoring.

An old study has found that passive snoring affects your health in a significant way. Here is a list of some key findings of the study that having a disrupted sleep pattern causes:

  • Increases your risk of anxiety and depression
  • Increases your chance of becoming obese
  • Ups your risk of stroke
  • Has a huge impact on your body’s recovering ability
  • Affects important biological functions
  • Affects metabolism
  • Disrupts memory consolidation
  • Makes you prone to making mistakes at work
  • Makes you think slowly
  • Lowers your productivity
  • Weakens your immune system
  • Affects your relationship
  • Can trigger stress, inflammation, and changes in appetite

The study conducted by the Queen’s University, Canada that examined the effects of snoring on hearing found that all the passive snorers suffered hearing damage, equivalent to sleeping next to an industrial machine.

Another team of researchers from the Imperial College of Science in London reported that snoring can increase blood pressure and that the greater level of noise, the higher the risk of hypertension which can also cause other health conditions like heart disease, kidney problems, and dementia.

What can you do to prevent these problems?

  • Sleep with earplugs, headphones.
  • Or sleep in a different room.
  • Get the buzzing device called ‘Somnibel’ which can be worn by your snoring partner. It gently vibrates until they stop snoring.
  • Get them to use nasal strips, mouth guards, special pillows or follow hypnotherapy.
  • Or get the pineapple plant that could stop your partner from snoring. It is believed to improve air quality with oxygen and prevent snoring.
