Free lecture on zero waste this afternoon

MiraCosta College will host a free lecture on “Zero Waste: What Is It and What Can We Each Do?” as part of the lifelong learning lecture series from 1 to 2:30 p.m. today in the Student Center Conference Room 926, at the San Elijo Campus, 3333 Manchester Ave. Jackie Bookstein of Solana Center for Environmental Innovation will discuss the center’s Zero Waste program, which includes recycling, reducing and reusing, composting and food waste. Art Institute to hold ceramics workshop

A Jungle in the Desert Ceramics Workshop is set for 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Lux Art Institute, 1578 S. El Camino Real. The workshop will be led by instructor Aeriel French, as part of a community art installation. Families are encouraged to attend. Participants can make animals, plants and flowers in clay. Chiachio & Giannone will incorporate the pieces into their own work as part of their residency at Lux. Pieces will be returned to the participants after the exhibition. Health event set for Sunday at library

The McBride Sisters will be at SIP Wine & Beer, 131 S. Orange Ave., from 6 to 10 p.m. today. The event, themed “a night of Black Girl Magic,” will blend community, culture and conversation and celebrate the accomplishments of black pioneers in entertainment, business, social justice and the wine and spirits industry. Walk for Animals

takes off Saturday

The 2020 Walk for Animals – North County takes off Saturday at Kit Carson Park, 3333 Bear Valley Parkway. The event kicks off at 7 a.m. with registration, pancake breakfast and entertainment; blessing of the animals is at 8:30 a.m.; and the walk begins at 9 a.m. Dog activities and Vendor Village are from 10:15 to 11 a.m. Registration fees are $10-$30. Soul Fusion fundraiser features ‘Jazz & Jokes’

MiraCosta College presents the Soul Fusion: Jazz & Jokes music and comedy show at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Concert Hall (Building 2400) on the Oceanside Campus, 1 Barnard Drive. The Umoja program’s seventh annual Soul Fusion fundraiser will be hosted by comedian Daran Howard, featuring music by Big with Donnie Troy and comedy by Gilbert Esquivel. Proceeds support students in the Umoja program, designed to assist African-American students, among others. A VIP reception is from 5 to 6:30 p.m. with food, wine and a silent auction. Printmaking workshop

The Hill Street Country Club and Linksoul present a printmaking workshop and art talk with Kelvin Lopez and Akiko Surai in honor of Black History Month from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Linksoul, 530 S.
