For those who haven't heard the sad news, Sam Beall,39, proprietor of Blackberry Farm of Walland,TN died Thursday February 25th in a skiing accident in Colorado.

Sam built Blackberry Farm as a resort, a fine dining experience and a wine lover's destination with a cellar of 200,000 bottles of the world's finest wines. With an appreciation of the role that a beer could play in the appreciation of a fine meal, Blackberry Farm launched a brewery in 2011 with brewmaster Roy Milner, focused on seasonal saisons. After garnering acclaim for their beers served on-site, the brewery expanded with an offsite brewery in Maryville, TN in early 2015. Their initial distribution was focused on restaurants that shared Blackberry Farm's appreciation of beer-food pairing. Luckily for the rest of us, since the launch of the new brewing facility, Blackberry Farm Saisons have reached broader distribution, giving me the fortune of experiencing Sam's vision.

“I personally find a lot of craft beers and micro brews to be very hoppy, high in alcohol, high gravity; there’s a lot, a lot, a lot,” Beall said, adding that beer and food pairings should be approached in the same way a steward chooses wine for a particular dish. “A sommelier is not looking for the biggest and boldest. They’re looking for balance, and that’s what we’re striving for.”

RIP Sam Beall, and may your vision survive you.
