Kontji Anthony named co-anchor at WMC Action News 5

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - WMC Action News 5 in Memphis announced that Kontji Anthony will be co-anchor for WMC Action News 5 at 5pm, 6pm, and 10pm. Anthony came to WMC Action News 5 in July of 2005, where she started as a reporter. She was promoted to weekend anchor in 2008, then 4pm anchor in 2015. Anthony has been filling in, anchoring the 4pm, 5pm, 6pm, and 10pm newscasts since December, 2015, and will now be a permanent fixture in those newscasts.

"Kontji Anthony is the perfect partner for our team of Joe Birch, Ron Childers, and Jarvis Greer," said WMC Action News 5 Vice President and General Manager Tracey Rogers. "I am thrilled Kontji is taking on this new role with WMC Action News 5 to carry the torch forward in the years to come. Kontji is an incredible journalist and cares about the people of the Mid-South as if they were her own family."

A native of New Rochelle, New York, Kontji Anthony began her broadcasting career at the age of 17 as a host for her high school television station. She has worked for television news stations across America, both behind the scenes and in front of the camera.

"It's surreal to be given the opportunity to live your dream in the town that you love," said Anthony. "It has been an absolute joy to work with the most seasoned news team in town. I am extremely humbled and cannot thank the leadership at WMC Action News 5 enough for believing in me."

Kontji's first job in TV news was as an assignment desk assistant and field producer for WCBS in New York, New York. Her first TV reporter job was at KTVO-TV in Kirksville, Missouri where she videotaped and edited her own reports.

Kontji then accepted a position as a reporter/anchor at Bakersfield, California's KBAK-TV. Her next broadcasting job was as a general assignment news reporter for Good Day Sacramento where she also wrote reports for The Stockton Record newspaper.

Before accepting her position with WMC Action News 5, Kontji was the morning and noon anchor at WNCT-TV in Greenville, North Carolina where she also worked as a radio news commentator and hosted the local DIY Network home improvement show "Do It Yourself Eastern Carolina."

Kontji is a graduate of Howard University's School of Communications; a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, The National Association of Black Journalists, and The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
