2019 Massachusetts high school Super Bowl champions crowned at Gillette Stadium
The 2019 Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Football Championships, also known as the high school Super Bowls, are being played at Gillette Stadium this weekend.The home of the New England Patriots is hosting all eight state championship games, which are being played from Friday through Saturday nights.This marks the 13th consecutive year that Gillette Stadium has hosted the MIAA state championship games.Division 8: St. Bernard’s 30, West Bridgewater 8St. Bernard’s won its second straight Division 8 state title, and third overall, with a 30-8 victory over West Bridgewater Friday night.Junior running backs Tyler Thibodeau and Nico Mancini, respectively known as “Thunder” and “Lightning,” carried the Bernardians (9-4) to a championship.Mancini racked up 128 rushing yards and three touchdowns while Thibodeau ran for 104 yards and one score.Senior running back Devin Georgantas scored the Wildcats’ (12-1) lone touchdown, which was set up by a 46-yard kick return by sophomore Aiden Baker and a 28-yard pass from senior quarterback Matt Lavoie to senior tight end Tyler Stone.Division 2: Mansfield 41, Lincoln-Sudbury 0Senior Vinnie Holmes ran for 149 yards and three touchdowns on just 10 carries to lead Mansfield to a 41-0 victory over Lincoln-Sudbury in the Division 2 state championship game Friday night.The Hornets (11-1) captured their eighth state title, all of them coming since 1992.For the Warriors (8-4), junior wide receiver Jack Malone broke off a 52-yard run in the first half while senior wide receiver Griffin Brown had a 44-yard catch in the third quarter.Division 7: Abington 21, Leicester 7Abington captured its fifth state championship, all of them since 2002, with a 21-7 win over Leicester in the Division 7 title game Saturday morning.Senior running back Will Klein ran for 207 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries for the victorious (11-2) Green Wave. He punctuated his performance with a game-sealing interception late in the fourth quarter.The Wolverines (12-1) were led by senior wide receiver Jack O’Neill, who finished with 94 receiving yards, including a 74-yard touchdown catch that helped his team take a 7-6 lead in the first quarter.Division 6: Ashland 28, Bishop Fenwick 22Ashland won its first state football championship since 1995 by capturing the Division 6 crown with a 28-22 victory over Bishop Fenwick.Senior quarterback Dominic Cavanagh scored four touchdowns for the Clockers (12-1), three through the air and one on the ground.Junior running back Angel Martinez hauled in two touchdowns for the Crusaders (10-3).

The 2019 Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Football Championships, also known as the high school Super Bowls, were played at Gillette Stadium this weekend.

The home of the New England Patriots hosted all eight state championship games, which were played from Friday through Saturday nights.

This marks the 13th consecutive year that Gillette Stadium hosted the MIAA state championship games.

Teams competed for the brand new Agganis state championship trophies, which are named after former Boston University football star and Lynn native Harry Agganis.

Division 8: St. Bernard’s 30, West Bridgewater 8

St. Bernard’s won its second straight Division 8 state title, and third overall, with a 30-8 victory over West Bridgewater Friday night.

Junior running backs Tyler Thibodeau and Nico Mancini, respectively known as “Thunder” and “Lightning,” carried the Bernardians (9-4) to a championship.

Mancini racked up 128 rushing yards and three touchdowns while Thibodeau ran for 104 yards and one score.

Senior running back Devin Georgantas scored the Wildcats’ (12-1) lone touchdown, which was set up by a 46-yard kick return by sophomore Aiden Baker and a 28-yard pass from senior quarterback Matt Lavoie to senior tight end Tyler Stone.

Mansfield Hornets, Division 2 state champions

Division 2: Mansfield 41, Lincoln-Sudbury 0

Senior Vinnie Holmes ran for 149 yards and three touchdowns on just 10 carries to lead Mansfield to a 41-0 victory over Lincoln-Sudbury in the Division 2 state championship game Friday night.

The Hornets defense was buzzing and held the Warriors to just 117 yards of total offense and came away with three interceptions.

Mansfield (11-1) captured its eighth state title, all of them coming since 1992.

For Lincoln-Sudbury (8-4), junior wide receiver Jack Malone broke off a 52-yard run in the first half while senior wide receiver Griffin Brown had a 44-yard catch in the third quarter.

Abington Green Wave, Division 7 state champions

Division 7: Abington 21, Leicester 7

Abington captured its fifth state championship, all of them since 2002, with a 21-7 win over Leicester in the Division 7 title game Saturday morning.

Senior running back Will Klein ran for 207 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries for the victorious (11-2) Green Wave. He punctuated his performance with a game-sealing interception late in the fourth quarter.

Ashland Clockers, Divsion 6 state champions

Division 6: Ashland 28, Bishop Fenwick 22

Ashland won its first state football championship since 1995 by capturing the Division 6 crown with a 28-22 victory over Bishop Fenwick Saturday afternoon.

Senior quarterback Dominic Cavanagh threw for 270 yards and three touchdowns for the Clockers (12-1) while adding another score on the ground.

Brian "Bubba" Gazard, Ashland's senior H-back, caught two of those touchdown passes and finished with 61 receiving yards.

Senior wide receiver Jake Latessa finished with a game-high 117 receiving yards on five catches for the Clockers.

Junior running back Angel Martinez hauled in three passes for 45 yards and two touchdowns for the Crusaders (10-3). He also finished with 56 rushing yards on two carries.

Swampscott Big Blue, Division 5 state champions

Division 5: Swampscott 21, Amherst 0

Swampscott defeated Amherst 21-0 in the Division 5 state championship game Saturday afternoon to capture its third state title and first since 2007.

The Big Blue (10-3) was dominant on defense, holding the Hurricanes to 53 yards of total offense.

Swampscott senior quarterback Graham Inzana threw for 102 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score.

Senior running back Dylan January ran for a game-high 78 yards and found the end zone on the ground.

Junior wide receiver Andrew Augustin had 50 receiving yards for the Big Blue, including a 22-yard catch-and-run for a touchdown.

Amherst's defense also played well, holding Swampscott to 185 yards of total offense and keeping them off the scoreboard in the third quarter.

Senior nose tackle Jack Nagy was disruptive on the interior for the Hurricanes.

Melrose Red Raiders, Division 4 state champions

Division 4: Melrose 28, Plymouth South 13

Melrose beat Plymouth South 28-13 Saturday night to cap an undefeated season with its second Division 4 Super Bowl title in three years.

Senior running back William Pesce scored two touchdowns for the Red Raiders (12-0): a go-ahead 14-yard touchdown catch and a 62-yard punt return to create some breathing room. He also sealed the game with a late interception.

Melrose junior quarterback Brendan Fennell finished with a game-high 108 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown. Fellow junior Matthew Hickey added 76 rushing yards and a score of his own.

The Panthers (10-3) were led by senior running back Nick Siegelman, who gained 91 rushing yards and found the end zone twice on the ground.

Springfield Central Golden Eagles, Division 3 state champions

Division 3: Springfield Central 38, Duxbury 13

Freshman phenom William Watson II threw for four touchdowns and ran for one more score to lead Springfield Central to a state championship victory over Duxbury Saturday night.

The Golden Eagles (10-2) won their second straight Division 3 title and their ninth Super Bowl championship since 1991.

Springfield Central senior wide receiver Kevin Key opened the scoring in the second quarter with a 56-yard touchdown catch.

Watson then connected with senior receiver Andre Ellison on two big scoring plays of 43 and 58 yards. Ellison finished with a game-high 102 receiving yards and the two touchdown catches.

Junior running back Marcus Crawford led all rushers with 101 yards, including a 55-yard scoring run in the third quarter.

The Golden Eagles defense matched the explosive offense by forcing three interceptions in the game.

Duxbury senior quarterback Will Prouty finished the game with 148 passing yards and two touchdown passes. He also led the Dragons (9-4) in rushing with 51 yards.

Division 1: St. John's Prep 21, Catholic Memorial 14

For the second straight season, St. John's Prep defeated Catholic Conference rival Catholic Memorial for the Division 1 state championship.

The Eagles avenged their only loss of the season by defeating the Knights 21-14 Saturday night.

St. John's Prep (11-1) captured its fifth title and its third since 2012 with the victory.

Eagles' senior Matt Duchemin finished with a game-high 119 receiving yards and made a spectacular 32-yard touchdown catch to help his team take a 21-7 lead. On defense, he came away with a pair of interceptions.

Sophomore running back James Guy finished with a game-high 90 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Senior quarterback Matt Crowley passed for 145 yards.

Catholic Memorial was led by junior running back Owen McGowan, who finished with a team-high 53 receiving yards and scored a rushing touchdown.
