West Memphis wants Memphis in May in 2020
“We want Memphis in May and we’re willing to do what ever we can that’s reasonable”
WEST MEMPHIS, AR (WMC) - West Memphis Mayor Marco McClendon is putting in his bid to host Memphis in May 2020.
“I’m throwing our hat in the game. West Memphis wants Memphis in May in 2020,” McClendon said.
With the planned redesign of Tom Lee Park, Memphis in May officials say the park will no longer be suitable for the Beale Street Music Festival or the World Championship Barbecue contest events that attract around 100,000 attendees each.
West Memphis Mayor Marco McClendon claims he received information from Memphis in May officials that West Memphis might be the spot for the 2020 festival.
He didn't waste any time putting together a presentation.
“The economic impact would be great and like I said we’re doing everything to promote West Memphis,” McClendon said.
Memphis in May officials weren't happy with the six alternate locations proposed by the Downtown Memphis Commission.
Places like MLK Riverside Park and golf course, Mud Island and 9 acres in the Beale Street Entertainment District and Church Park.
Mayor McLendon says West Memphis has lots of land. He says he has been talking with land owners and has a few places to suggest to Memphis in May officials.
A site near Mound City, just off the interstate just about 5 miles from Tom Lee Park, T. Rogers park 12 miles from Tom Lee and the Fairgrounds 10 miles away.
“We want Memphis in May and we’re willing to do what ever we can that’s reasonable,” McClendon said.
Mayor McClendon says he will present his proposal to Memphis in May officials Tuesday.
