Mercury-based UV lamps employ an electric arc through vaporized mercury to produce UV light. These lamps can disinfect an area in lesser time, as the aperture produced by the lamp is broad. These lamps can emit UV light of UVA (320 to 400 nm), UVB (280 to 320 nm), and UVC (200 to 280 nm) wavelengths. The intense spectrum of light causes the rapid curing of numerous applications, such as printing, bonding and assembling, and coating and finishing. UV light spot cure units typically cure UV and visible light-curable adhesives and coatings in 1–10 seconds. A spot curing system’s intensity range from ~4,000 to 20,000 mW/cm2 at a wavelength of 320–400 nm. Spot curing is mainly used to cure applications such as coating and encapsulates. UV spot curing systems provide curing of adhesives in small areas using light guides. Spot curing requires less external shielding compared with the flood cure system.
