A proposed resolution to protect the rights of gun owners goes before the Clay County Commission Tuesday afternoon.
The resolution cites the Second, Tenth and Fourteenth Amendments of the U.S. Constitution andArticle-1 of the Florida Constitution as the basis to establish what’s called a Second Amendment Sanctuary county.
Middleburg resident Mary McDermott opposes the resolution. She’s trying to rally others who agree with her to attend the meeting and speak out against the idea.
“What we want is sensible regulations so that when people are threatening and harassing—like after Parkland when people said oh, you know, we called the FBI about this guy, we called the police about this guy, we knew this guy was trouble. And there was nothing that law enforcement could do. Well you know we want law enforcement to have something they can do.”
As a Second Amendment Sanctuary, Clay County would refuse to implement programs and enforce federal and state laws that are thought to undermine people’s rights to buy and own firearms.
Lake, Marion, Suwanee and Bradford counties have already declared themselves Second Amendment Sanctuaries.
The Tuesday, November 26, Clay County Commission meeting starts at 4 p.m. at the administration building at 477 Houston Street in Green Cove Springs.
The meeting is also available to stream live on the Clay County government website.
