Girls Basketball Roundup: NLS Wildcats dominate Paynesville Bulldogs

New London-Spicer outscores Paynesville 51-17 in first half for girls basketball win

NEW LONDON — It was a great overall game for the New London-Spicer Wildcats, who beat Paynesville, 75-39 Thursday night in a non-conference girls basketball game.

NLS head coach Mike Dreier agreed that his team got off to a great start, leading 51-17.

“We really did,” Dreier said. “The girls came out very focused and they performed at a high level in the first half and for the game, actually.”

Erin Knisley led the Wildcats (3-0). The 6-foot-2 junior center had 25 points and six rebounds. Emma Hanson, a 5-8 junior forward, had 10 rebounds.

“I was impressed with our total game,” Dreier said. “We played good defense. We scored inside and outside. It was a good night for us.”

Paynesville (0-2) was led by sophomore guard Macy Carlson’s nine points. Paynesville plays a Central Minnesota Conference game at 7:15 p.m. Friday at Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa.

NLS hits the road to play at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Morris/Chokio Area. The Tigers beat NLS last year.

Litchfield remains winless early in the season after suffering a 32-point loss on the road at Hutchinson on Thursday.

The Tigers had four scorers in double figures, led by junior guard Karissa Korson and her game-high 17 points. Meanwhile, junior guard Sydney McCann put in 10 points to lead the Dragons.

Litchfield will try to enter the win column at home against Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Holding Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg to 16 points in the second half, Central Minnesota Christian improved to 2-0 this season with a comfortable victory at home.

Scoring a game-high 23 points, Coco Duininck made five of the Bluejays 13 3-pointers. She also had team-highs with eight rebounds and four steals.

Elsewhere for CMCS, Reegan Duininck added 13 points and six assists. Elli Stoel had 15 points.

Maret Gjerde was the only player who scored in double figures for the Fighting Saints with 12 points. She added nine rebounds while Madison Rohner had nine points and a game-high 10 boards.

KMS will look to earn its second win of the season at home against Renville County West at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

CMCS next will visit Heritage Christian at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Up 35-19 at half, Lac qui Parle Valley didn’t let up against Camden Conference rival Dawson-Boyd as the Eagles pulled away with a victory in Dawson.

Macie Lund led a quartet of LQPV players in double figures with 18 points while also tallying five steals. Addy Bonn and Alex Stitt both had 12 points while Sidney Gerdes chipped in with 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

Avery Bartunek did a little of everything for the Blackjacks with 17 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and a pair of steals.

LQPV heads to MACCRAY next Thursday while Dawson-Boyd travels to Prinsburg to play Central Minnesota Christian on Tuesday.

Gabby Randt had a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds to lead MACCRAY past Renville County West in Clara City.

Kaisa Jaenisch added 13 points and seven assists for the Wolverines while Ella Bourne and Kate Hultgren each scored nine in the victory.

The Jaguars’ Lauren Wulf had game highs in points (24) and rebounds (13) while also protecting the rim with four blocks.

MACCRAY is at home against Simley on Saturday while RCW heads to Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg next Thursday.

Madison Hinz scored 22 points, and Shelby Mortenson also had a big night for Yellow Medicine East as the Sting picked up their first win of the year Thursday on the road against Camden Conference foe Russell-Tyler-Ruthton.

Mortenson came up with 15 points, nine rebounds and four blocks while Hinz hit four 3-pointers while adding seven rebounds and six steals to her efforts. Brylea Ruff chipped in with six points and six rebounds for YME.

The Sting return to Granite Falls Tuesday to play Tracy-Milroy-Balaton.
