Sewage Incident in Rio Dell

A new hazardous materials incident involving sewage has been reported to the California Office of Emergency Services.

According to a report published by the office, the incident took place at or near a road in Rio Dell at around 9:22 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 16.

About 3,000 gallons of sewage were released to the environment, according to the person who called in the report.

Here’s the description of the incident that was recorded by the Office of Emergency Services:

A sewage overflow occurred due to a storm surge. The City of Rio Dell responded to the scene. The sewage is exiting a manhole cover and impacting the Eel River at a flow rate of 100 gallons per minute. Vacuum trucks are on-scene and a cleanup is in progress. No property damage was reported.

This was the first hazardous materials incident recorded by the Office of Emergency Services in the Rio Dell area this year and the second sewage spill in the county overall.
