Tsunami will open its fifth Utah restaurant — this one in Salt Lake City’s popular 900 East and 900 South neighborhood — later this year.

The restaurant will be located in the former Alamexo Cantina space at 1059 E. 900 South, the company announced recently.

“We are very excited to have the opportunity to move into such a wonderful neighborhood,” Judy Cullen, marketing director for Tsunami, said in a news release. “We have always wanted to be a part of this walkable, energetic community, so when space became available, the Tsunami partners decided that the timing was perfect for expansion.”

The company anticipates an opening in late summer or early fall. The space will have inside seating for about 80, with another 40 spots on the patio. Tsunami also has restaurants in Salt Lake City (Sugar House), Midvale, South Jordan and Lehi.

The menu at the new Tsunami location will mirror that of its other restaurants with sushi and sashimi, beef, pork, chicken and vegetarian options and gluten-free offerings. Takeout will be available.

Last March, Alamexo owner Matt Lake said he couldn’t survive the disruption caused by the 900 South road improvement project — which is now underway — so he decided to close the restaurant.

Crews are replacing the deteriorating asphalt street with longer-lasting concrete and creating a roundabout at the five-leg intersection at 900 South, 1100 East, and Gilmer Drive to improve traffic flow through the area.

The project is expected to be completed this fall.
