TL;DR:

  • What It Is: A weighted, German-engineered single blade razor for a close, even shave without any irritation
  • What It Does: Prevents hair follicles from getting clogged and ingrown hairs from forming
  • Who It's For: Anyone who's tired of post-shave irritation induced by disposable razors

I was a late bloomer to all things shaving-related, and while it's not necessary to shave at all, I personally do it now because it makes me feel a little more confident. That being said, I've never enjoyed the act of shaving, which is most likely a culprit of exclusively using disposable razors. They're affordable and convenient, but usually require too many strokes and far too much pressure to remove all of my hair. No matter how gentle I am or how lubricated the razor is, my sensitive underarms are often left looking and feeling more inflammed than their pre-shave state

Karen Young, the founder of Oui the People, tells Allure she experienced terrible razor burn from the time she started shaving in her teenage years, and that ingrown hairs quickly followed. As she set out to create a solution, she quickly realized the disparity between men's and women's razors through her research. Not only did shaving ads from 1950 to present day use language "designed to make [women] feel like we aren't good enough," but the products themselves were "rooted in product design and marketing that suggests we're incapable of using a more mature tool than a plastic razor," Young recalls.

So she collaborated with engineers both in the U.S. and Germany to build a more sophisticated razor that is actually gentle on skin. They paid close attention "especially to the blade exposure, so customers could have a close but less irritating experience, as well as the handle and incredible weight of the razor, so that you can shave without applying pressure," Young says.

After my own less-than-ideal experiences with shaving, I knew it was time to toss aside the disposable and try Oui the People's The Single Rose Gold Sensitive Skin Razor, which looks like a legitimate work of art.

Despite being initially intimidated, I realized I had nothing to fear about this single-blade razor (also known as a safety razor) after the first try. Its German-engineered, 100-percent stainless steel blade removes hair evenly from your skin's surface, so you only have to do one to two passes with no additional pressure or need for repeat strokes, thus cutting down on irritation.

On the other hand, "aggressive, [multi-blade] razors use a combination of dull and sharp blades […] that tug and pull hair from beneath the skin's surface, so dead skin cells collect and hair follicles get clogged," Young explains. "When the hair grows back, it gets trapped beneath the skin's surface, causing ingrown hairs and inflamed hair follicles.”

Mona Gohara, a board-certified dermatologist and associate clinical professor of dermatology at Yale School of Medicine, is in agreement. “When you shave, you are [removing] a hair from a follicle, its home," she tells Allure. "This can be done gently with one blade, or more forcefully with multiple blades. The more blades, the more likely a bump will ensue."

Oui the People has detailed instructions and videos on its website about how to properly assemble your razor, which takes all of 30 seconds. Important note: When you screw the head parts back on, make sure the bottom rectangular piece's "Made in Germany" is visible from the outside. I made that mistake a few times.

To use, simply keep the angle at about 30 degrees relative to your skin, and be extra gentle around bonier areas. With the help of Oui the People's Sugarcoat Shave Gel-to-Milk, which transforms from a gel into a luxurious neroli jasmine-scented milky formula (but any shaving gel, cream, or oil will do), the razor removed all of my underarm hair with a few clean, even strokes. It was nothing short of game-changing. Whereas, with a disposable razor, I usually have to press down firmly and retrace my strokes until my armpits felt raw, I didn't have to exert any energy with the Sensitive Skin Razor. Its weight innately provides that pressure for you.

I even shaved my bikini line for the first time in my life, and it was, no joke, just as simple as my underarms. If I had known it could be that easy and painless, I would've done it so much sooner. Even the soft scrapping noises the razor makes are strangely satisfying to hear — especially because I didn't associate feeling an ounce of irritation or pain with them. Gohara adds that shaving with the grain of the hair, not against it, also helps in that department.

In the past, I'd probably use the same disposable razor blades for far too long, but my Oui the People razor forces me to be more mindful about replacing blades, since a dull blade may require you "to go over the follicle multiple times to sheer the hair, which creates more trauma [to skin]," Gohara says. "With a sharp blade, the job is done immediately."

The American Academy of Dermatology also recommends changing your blades every five to seven shaves to minimize irritation. Each Oui the People razor comes with a box of 10 blades, which acts as both a dispenser and storage container for your used blades (just slide them into the other side).

Yes, Oui the People's price tag is heftier than that of a disposable razor brand, but it's much more environmentally-friendly than single-use plastic options. You can check your municipality to see if they have a safe sharps collection program or request a sharps container from your local pharmacy or drugstore to then recycle yourself. And the handle lasts a lifetime — all you need to do is buy blade refills. FYI, if you're going to travel with this (when it's safe to, of course), a safety razor can only be packed in checked luggage, not carry-ons.

All in all, Oui the People's The Single Sensitive Skin Razor has forever altered the way I shave. Not only does the razor lend itself to a luxe, but more-elevated shaving experience that I actually look forward to, the smoothness and closeness of the shave is also incomparable to any other hair-removal experience I've ever had — and I can't imagine reverting back to disposable razors, ever.
