By the time this is published, readers will already know the winner of the 2018 World Cup. But irrespective of who that winner is, as I write this with two teams remaining, this has been a World Cup of upsets (the rare occurrence of no Argentina, Brazil or Germany in the semi-finals).

It has also been a surprising World Cup from a fans perspective – it was thought that Russia would be universally inhospitable and tensions with the UK and other governments would see fans attacked by hooligans or unwelcome. From most reports, this has not been the case: it seems to have been a rather enjoyable World Cup!
