Demolition Of Tiny SR 99 Viaduct Piece Means 10-Day Road Closure

Just a small piece of the Alaskan Way Viaduct is still standing. Crews will begin tearing it down on Thursday.

SEATTLE, WA — The end is very near for the Alaskan Way Viaduct. There's just one tiny, tiny piece of the overhead highway left to demolish in the Pioneer Square area, but crews will need to close Dearborn Street for 10 days to do it.

Starting Thursday morning, the stretch of Dearborn that spans Alaskan Way to 1st Avenue will close until at least Sept. 22, according to WSDOT. But that's just one of several closures or reroutes to prepare for this week.

Here's what else to expect in the downtown Seattle area:

Because of that Dearborn closure, several King County Metro routes will change temporarily. Between Sept. 12 and Sept. 21, the following routes will use Royal Brougham and Edgar Martinez Drive to travel between Alaskan Way and 4th Avenue (north and southbound):

  • 123

And these routes will use the Sodo Busway traveling north from West Seattle to 4th Avenue:

The SR 99 tunnel will close overnight Friday at 10 p.m. for regular maintenance. The tunnel will reopen on Sept. 14 at 8 a.m.

The area of Denny Way near SR 99 will close (weather permitting) all weekend for repaving. If it happens, Denny will be closed between 7th Avenue/Borealis Avenue and 6th Avenue from 7 p.m. Sept. 13 to 5 a.m. Sept. 16.
