Coronavirus: San Diego County Confirms First Death

The San Diego man who died was in his early 70s, according to Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer​.

SAN DIEGO, CA — Officials on Sunday confirmed the first coronavirus-related death in San Diego County.

The San Diego man was in his early 70s, according to Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. He was being treated in Santa Clara in California's Bay Area. He had recently returned from traveling to Hawaii.

Wooten could not release other details at this time.

As of Sunday evening, there were 205 cases of coronavirus in the county, a jump from 159 cases the previous day. Forty-one people have been hospitalized, with 15 in intensive care.

A total of 178 county residents have tested positive for COVID-19 as well as 11 people under federal quarantine at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar and 16 non-county residents, according to officials. Most of the cases involve people between 20 to 59 years old. Three cases involve individuals 10 to 19 years old.

Cases have been confirmed in the cities of Carlsbad, Chula Vista, Del Mar, El Cajon, Encinitas, Escondido, La Mesa, National City, Oceanside, Poway, San Diego, San Marcos, Santee, Solana Beach and Vista, as well as the unincorporated areas of Fallbrook, Lakeside, Ramona and Rancho Santa Fe.
