Big rig crash slows Highway 99 near Elk Grove Boulevard
Southbound traffic on Highway 99 moved slowly near Elk Grove Boulevard on Thursday after an early morning crash involving a big rig and SUV.
The crash happened around 3 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP said an 18-year-old woman was driving southbound, north of Dillard Road, when she made an unsafe turn into another lane, hitting the left side of a big rig.
The 54-year-old big rig driver then lost control of his vehicle and hit the guardrail on the left side of the freeway, CHP said.
Southbound lanes of Highway 99 were closed until around 5:15 a.m. to recover the big rig and because of a minor fuel leak.
Both drivers were taken to a nearby hospital and are expected to survive.
All lanes have since reopened.
Alcohol or drugs were not a factor in the crash, CHP said.
