A driver has been handed a court summons after allegedly flashing his lights to warn other motorists of speed checks outside a Middlesbrough school.

A series of checks were being carried out on Monday at four schools in a Cleveland Police operation.

But a 34-year-old man found himself in bother after officers allegedly spotted him flashing his headlights to alert drivers on the opposite side of the road to the police presence.

He has been reported for summons for obstructing a constable, Cleveland Police said.

Middlesbrough neighbourhood officers with the assistance of roads policing officers, carried out checks outside Sunnyside Academy, Coulby Newham, Captain Cook Primary School, Marton, and Corpus Christi RC Primary School, Pallister Park, where there is a 30mph speed limit, and outside Park End Primary School where the speed limit is 20mph.

Between 8am and midday, 40 vehicles were stopped and the drivers spoken to by police as they had exceeded the speed limit.

PC Mike Pilbeam said: “The primary aim of Community Speedwatch is to educate drivers about their speed and the need to slow down to reduce casualties and save lives.

"These roads have been highlighted by the local community as areas of concern.

“The scheme is really important, particularly outside schools when there are lots of children around and from today’s operation it is evident that not everyone is sticking to the speed limits."

He added: "Officers will be back again to carry out further operations like this one.

"Thank you to those drivers who did stick to the speed limits this morning.”
