The prime minister has been accused of ignorance and hyperbole over his warnings of a dystopian future.

In his inaugural speech to the United Nations general assembly Boris Johnson described developments in which “your mattress will monitor your nightmares” and artificial intelligence might lead to “pink-eyed terminators sent back from the future to cull the human race”.

Referring to Amazon’s digital assistant, he said: “A future Alexa will pretend to take orders. But this Alexa will be watching you, clucking her tongue and stamping her foot.” He said it took “real effort” to conceal one’s thoughts from Google and that “in future there may be nowhere to hide”.
